In those days, Chinese Turkestan and the British, and Russian maps depicted as a vast white spots with the approximate location of the designated cities and oases like Kashgar and Yarkand. Chinese Turkestan, or Xinjiang, as it is called today, has long been part of the Chinese Empire. However, the influence of the central authorities has always been a little here, and the Muslim population was much less in common with their Manchu rulers than with the “ethnic cousins “in Bukhara, Kokand and Khiva, located on the other side of the Pamirs. As a result, in early 1860 there broke out a large uprising of Muslims against their overlords. Chinese cities were burned and razed and their inhabitants massacred. The uprising, which began in the east, has spread rapidly westward, and soon the whole of Turkestan took up arms. It was at this point in the scene there was a remarkable Muslim adventurer named Yakub Beg, who proclaimed himself a direct descendant of Tamerlane. Veteran of many battles with the Russian, in which he distinguished himself by his bravery (and willingly shows five scars from bullets), now in the service of the former Muslim ruler of Kashgar, who lives in exile in Kokand. Last kindled hope to expel the infidels and the Chinese to return the throne.
In January 1865 Yakub Beg and his owner accompanied by a small armed group crossed the mountains and came to Kashgar, where they took part in the bloody turmoil of the various factions that fought each other for the throne, and all together against the Chinese. For two years, the charisma of the leader and borrowed from Russian European military tactics Yakub Beg was able to pull out of Kashgar and Yarkand and China, and local competitors. They say two Chinese Muslim prisoners governor chose suicide. According to a colorful but not very reliable source, the defenders of Kashgar, before you give up, ate their wives and children, and even before devoured all four-footed in the city, including cats and rats.
